Which Career Choice Is Better Correctional Officer Or Medical Sonographer?

This Question From South Carolina Nursing Schools | 2 Answers

QUESTION:

I live in NJ rite now but will be relocating to Greensboro,NC in two months. It will be a huge transition moving seeing as though jobs are harder to come by in the south and they pay less than in NJ.At first my plan was to enroll in school and pursue an associates degree in medical sonography but the program at the school i wish to attend only accepts 10 applicants each year and im afraid if i dont accepted what will i have to fall back on.Then I started doing some research on correctional officers because i have been a security officer in NJ for over a year now and im thinking possibly i can work as a correctional officer while going to school for sonography but does that make any sense because working as a correctional officer is a career move in itself so what im trying to decide is if whether i should apply for a correctional officer position and enroll into school or just work as a correctional officer?does anyone work as a correctional officer or sonographer in the state of North Carolina?? I guess im worried that when i get down there i wont be able to find employment and im going to struggle taking care of myself and paying bills. Also I have my nursing assistant license but its been expired for a while now an i have to re test in order to get it renewed. the bad news is i dont have any experience working as a nursing assistant so i think it’ll be hard finding a job in that field.an also security i called a few companies and they werent doing any hiring…SO WHAT SHOULD I DO???????????? Thanx in Advance

here is my take. i have not been to NC so can’t be sure but everywhere that i know there are many nursing assistant jobs. you should be able to get one easily. you might have to study and get your license first, i don’t know. also the cost of living in NC is much less than NJ so you will not be starting behind the curve.
next, i would decide what kind of schooling would be best and go for that while working as a nursing assistant. i also think nursing is a better career than sonography in that it would give you more options and perhaps better pay as well, and so might be something you would want to look into.

These are two relatively different fields.
Medical sonographer involves working with a varied type of patients to figure out diagnostic problems such as infectious, viral, cancers, and other things that might be within the person’s body. This is where you’re working in a rather secure area, and also you’re working with one or two people or patients at a time. You’re normally working in the hospital setting or in a clinical setting.
A correctional officer is often working in the prison, or correctional facility. You are sometimes working with people who have varying criminal offenses or drug or other violations. You are working in a very secured area, but you are working with high risk people. If you’re a smaller lady, then this field may not be as good of a field, although it pays well.
If you haven’t been able to get any jobs as a nursing assistant, and your license needs to be renewed, then take some refresher courses in this, and then see if you are able to get a practicum to practice some of the skills again, and then you never know, you will be offered a job,.
    Good luck!
