Chapter one
I watched as he climbed the tree, looking down every once in awhile and smiling at me, excitement but fear washed over me as he was almost to the top of the big Oak tree that I had played in for years and years, but never dared to climb to the top of.
“ Look Leigh!” He said, laughing. He took both hands off the tree branch, and waved at me. “No hands!”
“Please Alex, be careful.” I said. The excitement vanished, leaving fear to take over me, and I buried my head in my hands and closed my eyes.
“I’ll be careful, if you just watch me!” He said. I looked up, and he grinned. He began to climb higher and higher then leaning against the branch and waving his hands wildly in the air, he started jumping, he began going higher, still jumping up and down as he put each foot on the higher branch, bouncing the whole tree. My fear grew more, bubbling in my neck, making me more and more deathly afraid.
We had been best friends since 1st grade, we rode the bus together. I remember crying every day I got on that bus, until one day he came and sat down by me and held my hand. There was also that one time, which I peed my pants in Mrs. Pope’s 3rd grade class, and he let me wear his jacket around my waist until my mom brought me more clothes. We rode scooters together, and we had our tree house in my backyard, where we would play spy kids and ninjas until dark and my mom would always get mad at me, and in 8th grade when I fell off the monkey bars at school and broke my leg, he carried me to the nurse and held my hand until the ambulance got there. We had a relationship that no one could understand, or ever would. But right now, It was my turn to take care of him, I had to get him to stop climbing before he got hurt.
“Dude, Leigh! Seriously! We could totally make a fort-“
“Alex,I think you need to come down before you fall.” I whispered.
“What?” He asked, he looked down at me.
“You-“
And then the tree branch he’d been rocking on and jumping on, snapped. I screamed, and the branch fell to the ground with a hard snap. I looked up, and saw him holding on to the branch with just his hands. I was about to tell him to step on to the branch next to him and I would go home and call the fire department to get help so he didn’t fall, but my worst fear happened, the branch he was holding on to dear life with snapped to, he fell hitting the ground with a thud, I heard the bones snap as he landed.
Oh my gosh, holy freaking crap, was all that ran through my mind as I stared at the brittle body laying in front of me. I couldn’t take a step forward to see if he was okay, I couldn’t form the words to ask him if he could hear me. The cold wind picked up, blowing my hair against my face and numbing my legs. What do I do? I asked myself, what do I say? I had to do something.
I screamed again, loud. And began to run, I didn’t even look to see if he was okay, I just ran. I had to get some help. I ran down the trail we had come, past the big green trees not able to compare to the tree he had just fallen out of. The cold wind was pulling me back, but I was determined to get to my house as quick as I could. I finally came to the opening, and ran to the black Iron Gate, running straight past my dog that greeted me, jumping over the left out pool tools, and straight to my back door. I threw the door open, yelling for someone to help me. But no one was home; I didn’t know what to do.
Calm down Leigh, panic makes everything worse.
I was trying to find air, to get my breath back, but none was coming in. I had no idea if Alex was okay, he could be dead right now, or wanting me, or trying to get up and he would fall and get worse hurt, and I had run away.
Panic didn’t even begin to smother, as I decided I needed to call 911. I dialed the number and held the phone to my cold ear.
“911?” A light airy voice rang on the other line. How someone could be so bubbly and friendly in an emergency, I don’t know. All I cared about was If my best friend in the world was going to be okay.
“Uh yeah, my friend just fell out of a 30 foot high tree.” I practically yelled.
“What are the names of you and your friend?” She asked.
“My name is Leigh Edwards and my friend is Alexander Henry.” I whispered, I felt my face going cold and it felt wet, I realized that tears were pouring down my face.
“Okay, your address please, Leigh.” The lady asked.
“2313 Perry Grove Lane, Portland Oregon, 55512” I said in a fast whisper again.
“Okay, Leigh. Call your parents, and inform them of what’s going on, and we will be sending some people out right now.” She informed me. I hung up, not knowing where to go, or what to do. All I could picture was that long lanky body falling through the air, me screaming, and every bone In his body cracking, while I ran. Why did I have to run? He wouldn’t have ran, he would have picked me up and took me home. I stood there, holdin
