Medical-surgical Nurse? Or Speech Pathologist?

I’ll be applying to college this month, and I’ve been contemplating whether to go into Nursing or Speech Pathology. A brief overview of each would be good, what’s the lifestyle of each, salaries, pros and cons, etc.
And what exactly do Surgical nurses do? Do they just hand the surgeon their supplies and such, or are they allowed to take part in minor surgeries?
How much do surgical nurses make in Illinois?
How many extra years of schooling is it?
