How Do I Find Direction And Establish Myself In A Career?

This Question From Florida Nursing Schools | 1 Answer

QUESTION:

I am 40 years old. Never been married. No kids. Never had a serious career or relationship that lasted longer than a year.
I was working as a bellhop in a hotel for last 15 years with no direction and chasing women.
Then I got serious about life.
I set goals for myself in 2000. The four goals I set age at age 32 were: 1.) get a college degree 2.) Buy property 3.) Get a career 4.) get married and have a family.
I have accomplished three goals. I finally got the college degree in potical science 3 years ago, bought property(condo and some land) two years ago. I also got the girl i want to marry. We have known each other 3 years..been dating 3 months..
The problem is: She is doubtful about our relationship and we always aruge because I havent got a solid career and I am not esstablished in life. She says I dont make enough money as a substitute teacher and limo driver to support a family. Thus, im losing my girlfriend. The economy is bad in Tanpa, Florida and I cant find a solid career here. This state is horrible for careers. Been looking for a career for 3 years now. I may have to move to Chicago to find a career and rent condo. But its been one year with no tenants. Plu sits cold up north. I dont want to move. I’m miserable.
I have tryed 6 careers with much unsuccess and no happiness. I have tryed sales, nursing, teaching, construction, social worker, and hotels. I hate sales, I hate teaching, didnt like nursing, i didnt like construction. I dont know what else to do with my life.
My girlfriend says im unstable in a career and she is right. I have no direction. I wish god would have blessed with me “math skills.” I would have been an engineer, banker, or physician. I dont want to be a lawyer. I feel like my life is over. Im too old to have a family. Now im in debt with lousy condo and worthless college degree. All I have are social skills and creative skills. I dislike teaching am burned out on subbing. I tryed regular teaching and didnt like low pay and dealign with tennagers and kids.. How does one be successful in life with no direction? My dream was to become a actor. Tryed that already and there is no money in it. Im getting older i need something thats stable. I need benefits. I tryed govt jobs and no luck. Maybe I am not meant to have a family or have a wife. I guess i will be alone my whole life.
Its making me depresseda nd im giving up hope and losing sight of my 4 goals.. I should have never got a lousy mickey mouse degree in poly science.( my math skills are weak) I never should have bought a one bedroom condo. (should have bought a house)…..My girlfriend asks me why she meets succesful attorneys who have families and yet all the successful guys who planned through whole way through life are taken? Then she says she meets 40 yr olds liek myself who havent planned for the future and are now left with nothing. I agree with her somewhat. But im not a loser. I could go to law school right now and dig myelf into more debt. But whats the point? Nobody gave me direction growing upa nd I got no free rides. I have been trying to find a passion and direction my whole life with no luck.
I need help. Serious answers only. Dont say “go kill myself” or something silly. I really need some assistance to make my dreams come true. I want to be married and I want a family someday. I also want my dream career making 50k plus a year. HOW DO I ATTAIN IT IF I DONT KNOW WHAT DIRECTION GO IN? Please help.
Thanks.

I’m 42 yrs. old and have been teaching for 5 years now. I hated it at first, but it grows on you after a while. I’ve created a fair discipline program with the teens and focus on teaching interesting lessons. I’m sorry about your experience, but it can be totally different at other schools depending on the administration. There are so many people that would love to have a teaching job right now (more stable, less layoffs, pension, etc). I’m a teacher(5yrs) in Nevada making $43K with free medical & 20.5% employer/paid pension. It’s not a doctor or lawyer, but a very stable and respectable career.
I was married with two kids for 14 years and then got divorced 4 years ago. She took me for everything. I wish I never had that experience. So “the grass is always greener” dude. The idea of being alone for the rest of MY life THRILLs me! If you’re lonely it’s cheaper to just date or get a pet.
You may be too old to start over if you have too much debt. Build on the experience you already have to find your career and sell the condo when the market picks up (condos are terrible investments). Maybe you could use the Internet to find better paying jobs in an area with a lower cost-of-living.
    Good luck!!
