I am a single mom living in South Carolina. I am in Nursing School full time so that I can provide and give my daughter a life she deserves. I am finding that the money I am taking out for student loans to live off of is being completely absorbed into daycare expenses, leaving me struggling to be able to have any money to live off of. The director of my daughters daycare center told me to apply for ABC vouchers and they would help me with the cost of her daycare. She said that I would most likely qualify since I have already qualified for food stamps, I am a single mom going to school, and I am struggling to pay for the daycare expenses. Nursing school is extremely time consuming, I go to school MTW 9-4 Thurs F 7-3 clinicals. With this schedule it’s almost impossible to work. Not to mention that my classes change every 5 weeks causing my hours in class and days in class to change. The day care costs 125/week and hours are from 630am-530pm. Once I pick my daughter up, I have nobody to watch her so that i can work. It is all up to me! I called SCDSS last week and they told me that I just needed to come up there and fill out the paperwork and that I should qualify because i am in school. When I went up there this morning, the lady at the front desk informs me that just because I am in school I don’t get a free ride, I have to be working in order to get any help with daycare. (But, isn’t that why i’m going to school for?!?! So that I can have a better life and I don’t have to ask for help from anybody?!?!) I don’t WANT to be on government assistance, I HAVE to be in order for my daughter and myself to have the things we absolutely need. I just want to know what the REAL qualifications are for ABC vouchers, if there is any other form of child care assistance out there for me to look into, and if there is any adivice anybody can give me on this issue I am having.
