Gel Nails – Can they just use my natural nails?

I understand the technique of gel nails, but can’t find if they can just use your natural nails if they are long enough. I know they can apply tips, but I’m trying to stay away from that if possible, as I’m in my last semester of nursing school and we aren’t allowed to have fake nails. So, anyone know if they can just apply the gel over my natural nails without the use of any tips? Also, this is my first time getting the gel nails and only the second time in my life getting my nails done at all (I always hated how the acrylic ruined my natural nails). Anyone recommend a chain store that’s really good at gel nails? I’m in the South Carolina area. We have a Solar Nails, which is my top pick so far. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
