This Question From Student Loans | 3 Answers

QUESTION:

I am graduating from a 2 yr nursing program and have no student loans. I just got a job at the VA and will probably need a loan for the spring semester. Does anyone know if your job will pay off any student loan debt will it effect your bonus if you get one? And if they pay off student loan debt is it only a one time thing, just when hired, after this year want to continue my education and get my BSN and know that I will need student loans!! THANKS

Some employers will either pay off student loans, or provide educational assistance for their employees. I do believe VA pays for furthering your education, but don’t quote me on that. As an ADN looking to get a BSN I would be very surprised if they didn’t.
That said, some states have forgiveness programs (I know Kentucky does) in which loans are forgiven a percentage for each year one works in the state (for example, Kentucky is 20% per year, as long as you work in a non-private-practice setting).
Also, there are scholarship programs out there that will help, but to be honest, I did not find those to be any help in my education. Not to say you shouldn’t look, though.
Finally, consider the investment… you will be making more as a BSN. Maybe not right away, but the long-term picture for a BSN salary is much better than an ADN. Not saying anything against ADNs, but employers really want BSNs in their leadership/management roles, and that’s where the bux are.
Talk to your VA nurse recruiter and see what kind of support they offer. There’s nothing wrong in asking. You’ve got the job, so it’s not like you’re trying to get something for nothing.
PS. I did my summer preceptorship at VA and loved it! Best of luck to you!
