Diagnostic Medical Sonography?

This Question From Alabama Nursing Schools | 1 Answer

QUESTION:

Does anybody have experience in this field or have any information? I decided I wanted to choose a career in the health field so I was leaning towards becoming an RN (with an associate’s degree). I found out today that the nursing program is only offered during the day and I have to work 8-5 during the week (I was hoping it would be offered during the evenings so I could take classes at night). I have already completed a few years of college but b/c of my indecisiveness I am further behind than I should be. Being an ultrasound tech sounds very appealing to me, and it seems like something I may enjoy so I guess my question is, what all does this career require of you? For those of you who have chosen this career path, are you happy with it? Is it harder than being a nurse? (physically and mentally?) Thanks for any advice! Also how do I find out what schools offer a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program in Alabama?

Well, if you were turned off by nursing because of the hours, DMS will not be any better. I am in school for DMS and this 1st quarter we go only 3 days a week. But starting next quarter we will have classes 3 days a week and clinicals 2 days a week. There really is not enough time to work. Only a couple of girls in my program still have a job, and their grades are suffering because of it. It is extremely time-consuming and demanding which doesn’t leave a lot of free time at all – for work, friends, social events, whatever.
**EDIT: The students in the sonography program take the classes together at the same time on a set schedule. You don’t get to pick and choose, you are told what your schedule will be. Most schools have a Mon – Fri 8a-4p type of schedule (# of days may vary). This is b/c only a handful of students are accepted at a time, like in my class there are only 11 of us, so there is no way they can split up and provide multiple classes.
As far as your other questions go, I am happy with it. I actually love it and can’t wait to start working in the field. It is very difficult though. I don’t know how it compares with nursing, but we do have to know cross-sectional anatomy, how anatomy appears on sonography, pathology of the organs, physics etc. etc. We have to know in-depth about the organs of the abdomen, the pelvis, the thyroid, breast, baby, neonatal brains, some vessels, etc.
To find an accredited program, look here: http://www.caahep.org/Find-An-Accredited…
There are 3 acc’d prgms in Alabama.
Here is another site with some good general information: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos273.htm
    Good luck :)
