Chicago is a much bigger city than Jacksonville.
It is very spread out and can be daunting at first, but once you have mastered the "L" and the bus systems; getting around is easy in the city.
You have the lake but if you prefer the ocean, maybe you should stick to the east coast.
New Haven is lovely; a big little city.
It too has a good transportation system, with trains directly into NYC. And because the city is flat, many people cycle to work.
I suggest you research both cities and get a feel for them.
Are you able to take a weekend to both before choosing?
Here are some links that may help:http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/
A good city statistics site:http://www.city-data.com/city/New-Haven-…
This is a great site; with everything you'd ever need to know about Chicago!http://www.chicagotraveler.com/http://www.city-data.com/city/Chicago-Il…
