Becoming A Midwife?

im 19 and currently in school to become a music teacher, however i have seriously been concidering becoming a midwife. im just curious as to how i would exactly go about doing this and if i NEED to become a nurse first. i dont really have any intrest in becoming a nurse but, if i need to do it i would. i just am looking for some really good information so that i can really make a decision. i would hate to finish 4 years and get a degree that i dont really want.
also, if anyone knows of any good programs (outside of a university) in the mass, connecticut, RI area that would be really great
