When I was 6 (I’m 24 now) my parents divorced and my mom moved me to Alabama to be with her family while my dad stayed in Iowa.My dad would fly me up every few months,but basically my Mom was raising me.My dad remarried when I was 9 to Ann,who I at first didn’t like.My Mom also remarried.
As a teen,I was really starting to feel confusion about my sexuality.I finally accepted I was lesbian and decided to stop fighting it.I told my mother about these feeling, and she immediately rejected me.My stepdad is a minister and he said that he could not have a a ‘sinner’ like me in his house.They spoke with my dad and decided I would go live with him and Ann.They were totally accepting and loving to me.
I could talk to Ann about anything,things I couldn’t talk to my Mom about.The way they accepted me made me feel so loved.Dad got me into a nice school and never made me feel bad about my lifestyle.When I finished high school they put me through college and was always tell me how proud they were of me.I finished school last December and have since gotten a nice job as a nurse.I’ve been with my girlfriend Sage since I was a senior in high school,almost 6 years,and she is totally accepted by my Dad and Ann.They include her in all of our family gatherings,such as thanksgiving or Christmas,and they are totally comfortable with our relationship.My Mom and stepdad have only spoken to me twice in 9 years,just to ask if I gave up this whole ‘lesbian’ thing.Dad and Ann have their 15th anniversary coming up in May,and Sage and I would really like to do something great for them for accepting me for who I am,without trying to change me,and also for accepting Sage and my partner.They don’t make a lot of money,so I would like to give them something they would never get for themselves.Any good ideas?
